Melbourne Design Week 2022: Transmogrify by Helen Kontouris, John Wardle’s Letter Chair & Improper Structures.
Melbourne Design Week 2022 is upon us, with a range of exciting new works and exhibitions set to showcase. Melding expertise of craft and love of texture, Melbourne Design Week sees the likes of Helen Kontouris, John Wardle and curatorial duo, Josephine Briginshaw and Eliza Tiernan, bringing Kvadrat Maharam textiles to life through an exploration of interesting form and unique design accents.
Transmogrify by Helen Kontouris
Helen Kontouris’ Transmogrify is a one-off work shown during Melbourne Design Fair. It builds on her original 101 chair (2002), tracing a new visual language that explores transformation through an array of textures. Limited edition yellow leather pieces that resemble layers of cut fettuccini, are suspended and sewn in a contrasting blue stitch to Kvadrat’s Divina 3 textile, and attached to the original frame.
To create the chair’s frame, Helen’s technique involves the application of glass fibre cloth and hand-painted resin to the lightweight, vertebra-like structure. Then, a selection of individual leather hides and additional secondary colours are cut into more than 1600 layered lengths to cover the frame in its entirety. Finally, the honeycomb chair rests on a custom lathed brass feed.
This special event is happening during Melbourne Design Week 2022, between 16-20 March at Warehouse 16, 28 Duke Street, Abbotsford.

Letter Chair by John Wardle
The Letter Chair by John Wardle will feature as part of ‘Relatively Useful’, an exhibition presented by Heide, Museum of Modern Art, John Wardle & Simon Lloyd. The exhibition examines works by John and Simon, presenting a fascinating exposition of their skills as makers. Comprising Twenty-five works, the exhibit traverses through mediums; furniture, ceramics and objects and will be showcased inside McGlashan and Everist’s Heide II at Heide Museum of Modern Art. John and Simon describe the ‘gradients of collaboration’ as works that have been designed both individually and collectively, over countless conversations and shared drawings.

Improper Structures
Improper is the new proper informs the concept beneath the exhibition curated by Josephine Briginshaw and Eliza Tiernan. The duo’s second exhibition, Improper Structures, reflects on everyday objects within interior spaces, moving away from the considerations around functionality to pursue subjects of play, intimacy, comfort and reward. The show brings together eight makers, across mediums; ceramic, textile, furniture and glass, celebrating the mingling of diverse art, craft and design practices.
