A Breathtaking Display from Kvadrat at Salone del Mobile 2022

Kvadrat had a compelling presence at the 2022 edition of Salone del Mobile, showcasing a wondrous new collection of expressive textiles.

This year, the Milan exhibition saw a curation of curtains, rugs and upholstery presented as immersive textural installations at Kvadrat’s showroom spaces in Corso Monforte.

Revealing their new collection Quotes, alongside collaborations with Alain Biltereys, Raf Simons, Daniel Costa, Sahco and Front, Kvadrat explored how quality, culture and ingenuity interact with design.

Quotes by Kvadrat

Kvadrat unveiled a debut collection of high-end residential curtain textiles and rugs entitled Quotes. A collage of bold graphics, expressive colourways and unique textures, Quotes was an intriguing visualisation of our natural environment. It combined signal colours from signs, logos and other man-made elements with natural materials, to highlight the complex, precarious relationship that exists between urban and organic landscapes.

The installation also featured several designs from acclaimed artist Alain Biltereys’ collection Untitled. The visual nuances of Alain’s paintings were transformed into a series of soft, fluid textiles made from natural materials and infused with subtle hues. Synergising the natural and the artificial, Untitled was a comforting portrayal of the simple shapes and geometries we encounter every day.

Raf Simons, Daniel Costa and Sahco inside Kvadrat’s Showroom at Corso Monforte

Kvadrat’s residential showroom featured collaborations with world-class creatives, including Raf Simons, Daniel Costa and Sahco.

The felted woollen furniture upholstery Vanir by Kvadrat/Raf Simons was inspired by the colour, texture and materiality of historical military coats. Although it was meticulously crafted to mirror the restrained, earthy colour palette of traditional tweed, the speckles of contrasting colours incorporated across the fabric’s shorn surface allowed a classic design to be embellished with the contemporary.

Daniel Costa’s flat-woven rug, Dashes, brought an element of modernity to the showroom; it saw the classic pied-de-poule houndstooth pattern transformed into an abstract, colourful graphic made from pure, handwoven New Zealand wool. With its twill construction using felted mill spun yarns, Dashes simultaneously created a sense of vibrancy and comfort.

Sahco’s collection of upholstery and draperies, Evoke, was a fascinating addition to the showroom. Inspired by organic forms in nature, it harmonised seemingly incongruous colours, tones and textures, to celebrate the imperfections of the human spirit and infuse the space with beauty and character. In a dynamic sensory experience, layers of eclectic artisanal materials created a space that was attuned to the emotions of its occupants.

Forest Wandering by Kvadrat Febrik, Moroso and Front, at Teatro Dei Filodrammati

Kvadrat Febrik commemorated Arda’s launch with an interactive scenic installation created in collaboration with furniture manufacturer Moroso and Swedish design studio Front, hosted at Teatro Dei Filodrammati. With a modular system of upholstered wooden stools, seating and backrests, Arda’s inherent earthliness was materialised in the form of tactile sculptures reminiscent of weathered rocks and woodland elements.

Kvadrat Febrik’s Arda is a double-knitted upholstery textile that mirrors the forms, textures, tones and colours found deep within the wilderness. Inspired by the positive impact these natural environments have on our wellbeing and creativity, the tapestry-like textile brings an element of organicity into the home. Made from natural woollen yarn, with an aesthetic redolent of Swedish forests, snowscapes and lakesides, Arda celebrates the profound cultural and psychological benefits of nature.
